Wouldn't you know it, the weather forecast was inaccurate...again! 40 to 60 km/h winds were predictd, so I slept in. When I awoke, it was calm and foggy, yet the prediction was still calling for high wind and thundershowers. And now I sit fretting. It was the perfect morning to cross White Bay, and I hesitated. Meanwhile, I enjoy the friendly hospitality of Marg and Bill Shelley. Marg loves baking and cooking. Needless to say, she's feeding me well.
Tomorrow's weather forecast looks favourable. Let's hope I can make the 25 km crossing safely. I will be relieved. It will be a 50 km paddle, with no stops as it is an open water crossing followed by rugged, steep cliffs until Great Harbour Deep, a resettlement community. Only Bob Pitman remains and he runs a lodge.
For lunch this evening "fish 'n brewis" is planned, a traditional Newfoundland meal.
Last night, I walked the oceanview trail, and saw numerous whales in the far distance, breathing and breaching. Some capelin has been reported in the area. The fishermen are excited that the capelin are arriving.

No need to fret, Wendy. Fleur de Lys sounds like yet another amazing place to explore enroute. Patience and intuition. You WILL get across the bay... in the meantime, enjoy your day!
So you're finally going to get a feed of fish and brewis, Wendy - we were wondering how long it'd be before you'd be confronted with Newfoundland's national dish. You'll enjoy it, and find it's great fuel for strenuous activities.
Ain't these winds something? Been blowing here on the Avalon Peninsula for over two weeks now, steady forecasts 30-50kms, 40-60 kms, 50-80 kms, mostly SW.
We're off to Eastport later the week, and are hoping for a little less wind than we've been having. The phone there is 677-2218; best e-mail is rhayes@nfld.com. We'll be hitting the CAP site in Glovertown every few days to keep track of how your journey goes.
Regards,
Rick and Chris
Wendy, you've not mentioned seeing any icebergs yet. Have they been in sight?
Hi Rick & Chris... we're getting excited!
Glenn or Kathy (or anyone else)-
Please let us know when you hear from Wendy. It looks like she probably crossed White Bay yesterday (4th) and the coast being what it is, she will not likely be updating this journal for a few days.
Thanks in advance! :-)
Hmm... no word yet, which I take to mean she's done the White Bay crossing and is currently out of communication range. This is the nail-bitingest part of the trip, from what little I know of Newfoundland.
Whoever hears from our Wendy first, please post!
Glenn
The forecats for the White Bay area have been favourable for the past two days - suspect she's across, but out of cell range. Very few occupied communities along that stretch of coast - so it could easily be another day or two before she's able to get in touch. We're heading out to our Eastport cabin tomorrow -can only check e-mail there (LD to our ISP, and v-e-r-y slow speeds), so we'd really appreciate it if anyone could drop us a brief e-mail (rhayes@nfld.com)when she makes port.
Regards,
Rick and Chris
Wendy called her mom on the 4th to say she'd crossed the bay safely and reached Harbour Deep. She used a couple's cell phone out on their boat. On the 5th, she paddled 'til Englee where someone was kind enough to let her use their house phone. I'm waiting for more word just like everyone but I'm glad our mom insists she call home as often as possible- my mom's my lifeline. Bottom line- she's across and A O.K..
ckayakersis....Thats great news! Thanks for letting us all know.
Andy
Aren't Mom's the greatest invention?! Thanks for being there for all of us, Wendy included!
